I was running through the fields - not those Cottesbrooke fields, these are the Cank Farm fields -and as I crossed the river and climbed up a track I saw a Crow-Person. I stopped as I did not want to scare him or her. I had often seen a crow in a tree over-looking the path and I assumed this was him/her.
I stood.
The Crow-Person started walking. Toward me. I was standing on the mound between two tractor rut, the Crow-Person was walking down the right-hand tractor rut. She/he kept on walking. Closer. Closer. CLOSER.
I did not want to get out my camera as I didn't want to scare him/her.
I just stood there. She/he walked right past me - eighteen inches from my feet. And carried on walking. I looked over my shoulder and said, 'Hello, Crow.'
At that, she/he took off - but flew only about fifteen feet into the scrub. And then began walking diagonally back to the path.
Once she/he got to the track, this Crow-Person continued down it in the tractor rut.
What was going on?
Clearly this Crow-Person had a destination. But, why walk? Was she/he ill or injured? And why didn't she/he notice me until I spoke? Was she/he blind?
It seemed it would be worse for me to try to intervene as she/he clearly intended to go somewhere (maybe to water) and I would cause him/her to fly again and that might cause pain. It would certainly cause fear.
So, I left the Crow-Person to his/her mission.
But I haven't stopped wondering about what was going on.
No, doesn't seem like usual behaviour (even though crows are good walkers). So you saw Crow-person fly for just a short distance. Hmm. Maybe hurt or ill.
