Daisy days

Updated: Jul 14

That is a deceptive headline, though I can supply two more images to go with the title.

I believe I saw one of these last year or the year before. Was it a darter? I think so.

As for this, it's a common magpie moth. Not that common as I don't recall having spotted one previously.

And this is a complete unknown. A yellow fly. sadly, I only managed to photograph its arse. Turns out, this yellow dung fly is one of the most commonly distributed flies in Britain. Who'd'a'thought?

Wasps have been visiting and both times I saw them, they made a bee-line for me - while the bees ignore me. I was daunted. And in between these two too-close encounters, I dreamed I was in a narrow passageway filled with wasps of different sizes - some absolutely huge. I checked out what this could mean on various dream interpretation sites and decided the obvious answer was the best: a sense of threat and danger (both the work for different employers this summer and the loss of some work next year.

I also saw in the garden the dead body of a VERY large bee. There are some large bees in the garden but the dead one was huge. It looked as if some clumsy human (me) had trodden on it while it was walking along the ground. Perhaps I was also afraid of insect revenge.

Anyway, here are some very alive bees.

And finally, the wild rose at the back of the garden, under the place where the blue tits nested.

I'm quite taken by your beautiful photo of that distinctive magpie moth. I don't remember ever seeing one before but they occur in North America too. This post says that they vary in form and the one pictured does look a bit different. https://inaturalist.ca/taxa/61918-Abraxas-grossulariata I love that you are featuring insects today. That's a special video of the bumble working the flowers. All the pics are lovely -- even the fly's arse. 😏!!
