I've had my first week or so as a Volunteer Reserve Officer at Pitsford Reservoir. The Dreaded is all in the past - though I aim to continue writing my pamphlet on animal cultures - when I can find some time. My schedule is jam packed as work, paid work, is ongoing. Plus I have work to do for my Animal Internship.
Hence, I was glad to sit down and watch Michael tidy up lumber! Lazy me!
The initial stages have been mainly about getting to know the reserve and Mischa's plans for it. I am so impressed by her vision, knowledge and enthusiasm. She and Michael have both been very patient with me.
I have been watching the ladybirds enjoy an all-you-can-eat aphid buffet on a burdock.
We also found some... strange caterpillar larder. I don't know who made this and what role if any the spider has. We had removed a sign - which we replaced to allow this peculiar metropolis to go about its wriggling business.
There is a large cormorant roost. They nest high in the trees and dry their wings in the sun by holding them out like washing.
This is one of Mischa's favourite trees - an oak molded to a stream's bank.
It has a gorgeous canopy.
There are actually many many poplars on the reserve - but no young ones. However, the people who want to plant Black Poplars are visiting Mischa in a few weeks. I have her permission to be there too.
Finally, this bench, to remember a man who loved this reserve.
Deal justly, love tenderly, walk humbly.
Beautiful.
What a lovely assortment of photos. Always glad to see spider and insects pictures. I imagine that spider would eat those juicy caterpillars. Glad to hear you will complete the pamphlet on animal cultures (when time allows).
