Here, hares, here!

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

Running round Cank Farm, rather than Cottesbrooke and rewarded by seeing two brown blobs.

I thought that, as often in the past, I was simply seeing lumps of earth or some big weeds. But one seemed to have ears.

I took that photo and then stepped forward and the two leapt up and raced up the field.

So, definitely hares.

I told my dad that I saw two brown hares and he said that hares are usually brown. I said that I thought it was a species name. It is the common name for the European hare. Turns out that they are endangered in the UK with numbers declining from seven million to 400,000 and extinct in some areas.

I thought they'd been introduced by Romans - but it seems they were already here though the Romans loved hares - apparently they connected them to Venus. Fertility. Hmm - them not rabbits? Oh well.

Anyway, I love seeing hares. Something about them lives my spirits.
