Sacred Water

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

Gary led us out on a wonderful walk. His orienteering is rather like mine: exploratory, spontaneous, nominally reliant on a map, variable and occasionally dangerous!

At one point, having missed the track that led us over the tor, we were walking along the side of a very steep slope, such that even sheep hadn't made tracks that way. Still, we made it back to the car in one piece and exhilarated.

This reservoir, finished in 1972, is at its deepest point about 74 metres deep. It has flooded a very steep valley and holds.... a lot of water. Plus it has an island.

At the end of the lake, we followed the river.

Which was soon lined by trees and tumbled over waterfalls.

Under this rock there was a cave, which of course I clambered into and through.

It was idyllic. The perfect playground for a Crone experiencing her second childhood.

The water is crisp and clean and clear, icy cold.. I wish I had taken some for my mead.

All around, birds sang and called, fluttering between branches. The moss was thick as a mattress, cool and damp.

A veritable "happy place"!

I liked the sounds of the water in the video. I liked that you followed the river and found trees. I'm also impressed that you explored a cave!! And I'm very glad that you got home to Devon 💙
