The AI suggestions

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

"Embracing tree-time as a sacred ritual" - this is one of the AI suggestions today for a topic on my blog. It's somewhat unnerving. The others, which incorporate, for example, terms such as the "unseen", all give me this uncanny valley experience. A mind that's not quite mine has mined my work and decided in which way I am heading.

It should've read yesterday's post.

Now, too, the AI suggests responses to texts and emails. Even if they are what I want to say - such as, No problem! I'll do that! - I simply can't concur. I have to type something myself. "No, really, that's fine. I'll get right on to it." Which sounds less like me than the AI suggestion.

I have noticed, sometimes, phrases in the robin's song or subsong that sound like blackbird or blue tit - not that he's an imitator like the marsh warbler or that famous Australian bird. He picks up someone else's song and makes it his own. As do all the avian imitators. How would they feel about AI? Would they care? Does it matter?

Today, in the garden, the birds suddenly silenced, and I could hear, from somewhere, a high pitched whistle. The sound I have heard from blackbirds and robins. I couldn't see whoever was whistling, nor did I know what it meant. I had the feeling that the female blackbird and a pair of blue tits were also listening. What did they make of it? Did they know what it meant? Was that what had silenced the birds? And why? Was someone in trouble?

Of course, I worried it was Tane, but later, I heard him subsinging close by.

I had to hunt up "uncanny valley experience". Rather unsettling.

And the bird imitators. Would they care? Does it matter?

Examples given -- not the same things, so in some way I think it matters.

That moment of silence in your garden - also uncanny. Very glad Tane appeared.
