The quaking and the scented

Writer's picture: CroneCrone

This evening after work (the job took 20 minutes, the travel took four hours and I had to wait around for three and a half hours - my work is bizarre) I went for a run with the aim of meeting some scented Poplars that Ian had told me about.

On the way, I met some Aspens. Check out the bark of the young tree - typical.

The leaves are smaller and more indented.

There was an older tree - and the shapes and sinews of its bark were glorious.

As you can see, this was right next to a river - and Poplars do like a lot of water.

The leaves seem silvery on the upper side and darker beneath, making a flickering pale canopy.

After a while I came to the row of trees planted as a windbreak.

What was incredible was that the trees seemed to have sprouted shoots. There were three of four young trees alongside them.

I sniffed the leaves. They were scented! But the smell was more... Play Doh than Lemon Sherbet. Though in the same family of scent.

I thought these might be more inclined to grow in a pot than the shoots from my trees in the copse. Some of them are surviving, but I am not convinced they will make it. So, another chance at propagation.
