The topic for Wyld Words was earthworms! Of course, I couldn't miss that.
Lizzie had done a lot of research and told us one thing that I must have missed during my worm course which I can hardly believe: when earthworms hook up, as it were, it lasts for 200 hours. Really?? The normal five minutes is more than enough for a Crone. [TMI - Ed.] [It's a joke. More like three. - Crone] [You need to get out more. - Ed.] [Isn't it more about staying in? - Crone]
This was my contribution - oh, and, by the way, earthworms sense light using special cells which have the most wonderful name...
Among the shadows, a glow -
as though through a glass darkly,
as through lids shut over questing eyes.
Light reaches deep through hollow places,
finding, in the unlikeliest spaces,
reception -
life's big YES!
A beam encounters
the light cells of Hess.
And this is CC's lovely poem.
Springtime
is a good time
to be a Worm –
when it's not too cold
not too hot, not too dry;
when rain
percolates into soil;
when old worms revive,
explore again
the world
underground; when new
ones will be born;
when earthworms find
their way
with muscles – contract
& relax – contract & relax;
& each new spring
is a good time
to be alive.
I'm glad you put our worm poems up together. That was a good workshop. And thanks for your help with the revision. I'm glad I gave up on trying to make the poem shape "look" like a worm ... I hadn't picked up on the phrase "light cells of Hess" until I actually read your poem here. Wondrous. And also wondrous is your addition in the post of sexual habits of worms ... and other species. ;-)
